Pregnant women and families with young children receive financial assistance in the form of WIC Fruit and Vegetable checks each month. These checks can be used to purchase fresh and healthfully processed dried, frozen, and canned fruits and vegetables at any authorized food retail establishment.
In May of 2010, the California Department of Public Health launched a WIC Fruit and Vegetable program to authorize farmers and the Visalia Farmers Market Association is proud to be one of the first certified farmers markets in California to become authorized to accept the new WIC Fruit and Vegetable checks.
The purpose of the WIC Fruit and Vegetable Check program is to:
- Provide fresh, nutritious, locally grown fruits and vegetables to: pregnant and lactating women, and families with small children.
- Increase consumption of agricultural commodities by expanding, developing, or aiding in the development and expansion of farm direct marketing opportunities for local farmers.
How it works:
- Customers at the Visalia Farmers Market can spend their WIC Fruit and Vegetable checks at any of our farmer’s booths.
