If you are a regular to our Saturday morning market, you should be very familiar with our dedicated vendors, John and Donna Bushard. Never missing a weekend, this fun couple spends their retirement years crafting unique and creative kitchen crafts in their Squaw Valley home. John has his own woodshop, and Donna has her own sewing room (which is quite impressive, ask to see her picture of it when you see her at the market!).
The Bushards have been selling at the Visalia Farmers Market for three and a half years with their booth J and D Crafts, but their love of crafting has spanned a lifetime. Long before joining the VFMA family, the Bushards have been handcrafting useful art in many different mediums.
Prior to woodworking, John’s woodshop was once a place where the couple created hand thrown pottery and kiln fired ceramics. And before crafting market wares, Donna indulged her love of sewing in making detailed quilts – some of which have been featured in the Best of the Valley Quilt Show in Tulare, California!
Everything at the J and D Crafts booth is handcrafted. Donna sews, knits and creates hats, scarves, rag rugs, denim lap quilts, aprons, bibs, pot holders, shopping bags, duffel bags and much more. John creates bird houses, hand carved spoons, tables, benches, and serving trays using reclaimed wood from old wine barrels. Altogether the couple offers 43 different items.
While browsing the Farmers Market, you can often find Donna knitting new creations at her booth and chatting with her regulars – and she has quite a few! Some regulars even travel from outside of the Central Valley to chat with the Bushards and purchase some of their unique creations. Some of their best sellers are their bags, spoons and – during the winter months – their hand knitted scarves and hats.
If you are looking for unique handcrafted gifts this holiday season, you can’t go wrong with something from J and D Crafts! Be sure to check out the fabric kitchen crafts in holiday prints.
